Guide to DW

guide to dreamwidth

This is just a little guide we made for our players to help with the move from LiveJournal. Here you'll find tips, explanations, and links out to various resources that players may find useful. If you have any questions or even suggestions for us to put on here, feel free to comment!

dw markups
Here are a few mark-up tags that you'll want to know. It's formatted in this chart so that you can compare the LJ mark-up with the DW one. It's really not too different, so you should be able to get the hang of it pretty quickly.

Label
DW
LJ
journal link <user name=JOURNAL> <lj user=JOURNAL>
entry cut <cut=TEXT> </cut> <lj-cut text=TEXT> </lj-cut>

A few other notes! You know how on LJ we could have the journalnames display a title? Like <lj user=JOURNAL title=WHATEVER>? Unfortunately, that's not available on Dreamwidth and at this point I am not sure if it will be implemented. But if it ever changes, I'll be sure to add it to the list.

Also, you can directly link to an LJ journal, like so: [livejournal.com profile] somarium_lords. The code for that is: <user name=JOURNAL site=http://www.livejournal.com>. For an even bigger reference list, go here.

a note on HTML
As many probably know by now, HTML is a little different on LiveJournal. Technically it's more correct on Dreamwidth than on LJ, but only HTML nerds probably care about that. An explanation on how tables work is linked later in the entry, but most players probably want to know how to handle the <font> tag.

This will not work: <font size="#"></font>

The following will work: <font style="font-size: #px;"></font>, <small></small>, <big></big>

So if you want to make your text small (<small>) or make it a little bigger (<big>) or even bigger (<font style="font-size: 24px;">), use one of the above codes. We highly suggest using the "font style" one if you wish to increase your font size to something really large. Otherwise, you're going to be stacking a lot of <big> tags.

Other standard font attributes, like color, bold, italics, strikethrough, and underline are the same. It's really only the font size attribute that needs to be mentioned. For a full list of all the HTML tags as well as examples and explanations on how they work, refer to this page.

Coding on the account profiles is also a bit different, especially with tables. I highly recommend referring to the guides and tutorials below for help with that.

how to import
For those of you who may want to import your old entries, here's a little quick guide on how to do it. It's pretty easy, really.
  1. Organize ⇒ Import Content. Or just click here.

  2. Import Journal. You should now be on the "Import Journal" page. It will ask you which service you're importing from (Livejournal or Insanejournal), the username, and the password. Just follow the directions on the page and click "Continue."

  3. Choose your options. You'll now see a table with different options for your to select from to import. Check whichever you want and click "Continue."

  4. Confirm Import. This is like any confirmation check page. Just double check to make sure all the stuff you want imported is on the list. Then click "Start Import."

  5. Wait. Now the waiting game. This actually shouldn't take too long—possibly even less than a minute depending on how much you're importing. At most a day or two. If anything fails or if there are some new things that you want to import in later, just repeat the process. It will bring in all the new things.

And that's it. Simple, right?

how to turn off customized comments
This is very different from Livejournal. Instead of being in the journal layout settings, it's actually in your account settings. So here's quick step-by-step for those who may want it:
  1. Account Settings ⇒ Display. Or just click here.

  2. Journal entry style. Where it says "Show my journal's entry pages in my chosen style instead of the site skin" uncheck the box.

  3. Save. Save it and you're good to go.

This will disable the custom layout comment view, just like back on LJ.
